The Pennsylvania Center for Dirt and Gravel Roads (CDGRS) is performing a sediment load reduction study of widely used environmentally sensitive management practices (ESMPs). The purpose of the study is to evaluate the sediment runoff reduction and sediment control potential of specific ESMPs that are advocated by CDGRS. One tool that was developed to carry out this study is an erosion maker. This is similar to a rainfall simulator, except that because we are interested in the erosion and sediment caused by rainfall events and not the actual characteristics of rainfall itself. The testing that is conducted on Shavers Creek Road in the Penn State Stone Valley Forest ensures that each run using the erosion maker produces the same amount of rainfall and covers a uniform area.
