NOTES: The site was established in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps under the U.S. Resettlement Administration. The CCC crew hand planted "bucket mix" conifers to control severe erosion in abandoned agriculture fields resulting from decades of intensive farming practices. The stand was free to grow for 60+ years. Mortality had become common, especially in the Red Pines, as the stand matured. The stand was schedule to be clearcut during Period 3 (1999-2003) of the Stone Valley Forest Management Plan 1989 to 2038. Undesirable pulpwood prices caused the rotation to be slightly extended. The current harvest operation is fully mechanized and very efficient. Small islands of advanced regeneration were protected to maintain species and structural diversity. Trees are being processed at the landings to prep for tree planting. The piles of woody debris at the landings were processed for mulch. 20,000 2-0 bare root Pitlolly Pine seedlings will be hand planted this April on a 6' by 8' spacing. Future treatments may include a chemical herbicide conifer release, pre-commercial thinning and a commercial thinning.
