Roads & Trails

The Penn State Forestland Management Office currently supports an infrastucture of 43 miles of roads/trails. Approximately 14 miles per year receive some degree of maintenance/ improvement (Example: recrowning, herbicide application, mowing). Until the late 1990's, all of the above mentioned treatments were conducted by the Penn State Forestland Management Office staff using the following heavy equipment:

1947 Road Grader
and
Bull Dozer
1947 Catepillar
Road Grader
1986 John Deere
350D Bulldozer

2000 saw a restructuring of the Penn State Forestland Management Office. All road maintenance/new construction is bid out to construction/excavation companies or implemented as demonstration projects through the Penn State Center for Dirt and Gravel Road Studies.

The above photos depict various aspects of several recently completed Penn State Center for Dirt and Gravel Road Studies projects located in the Stone Valley Forest. The goals for each project were to reduce sedimentation into our cold water fisheries, reduce road maintenance and improve the road quality."
