NOTES: The site was established naturally in the mid to late 19th century. The stand was free to grow for well over a century. Blowdown has been a characteristic of the site for decades, tip-up mounds are located throughout the stand. The stand was scheduled to be regenerated with a shelterwood harvest during Period 4 (2004 to 2008) of the Stone Valley Forest Management Plan 1989 to 2038. Over mature trees, steep slopes, saturated soils and high winds from tropical storms altered the management of the stand. Our office has taken the opportunity to use this naturally occurring event as a demostration on how to market hardwood logs to log buyers and mills. An independent logger has been contracted to cut and buck for maximum profit all storm damaged logs. PSU Forestland Management Office staff scale, grade and market all the logs. Extensive records pertaining to costs and revenues are kept for analysis. Future treatments will include a shelterwood on the undamaged portion of the stand.
