Chemical Control of Tree Of Heaven

The Penn State Forestland Management Office attempts to chemically control all occurrences of Tree of Heaven. Tree of Heaven (Simaroubaceae Ailanthus altissima) is an introduced exotic tree species native to Asia. Tree of Heaven is extremely adaptable to a variety of site conditions. Sapling size stems (less than 6" DBH) are controlled with Garlon 4 and basal oil. The herbicide mixture is applied to the sapling's stem by a wand connected to a 5 gallon backpack sprayer or by a simple 24 ounce spray bottle. Tree size stems (greater than 6" DBH) are controlled with Arsenal AC. The herbicide is applied directly to a wound created on the stem of the tree with a hatchet or machete. Treated stems and trees are painted and GPSed at the time of control to track the effectiveness of control.
