Penn State's Woodsmen Team Members Plant Trees for Dollars

On Saturday March 29th 2003 nine PSU student members of the Penn State Woodsmen Team braved the volatile spring weather to gain valuable forestry experience while increasing the Team's coffers.

A 2.2-acre Stone Valley Forest pine clearcut needed to be artificially regenerated with pine seedlings. The Penn State Forestland Management Office offered the task as a fundraiser to all the Penn State School of Forest Resources student societies, honor fraternities and clubs. The agreement was for a society, fraternity or club to receive compensation for planting 2700 2-0 Pitlolly Pine (pinus rigida x taeda) bareroot seedlings at a 6' by 6' spacing by the end of April. The agreed upon pay rate was $0.14/properly planted seedling.

Members of the Penn State Woodsmen Team successfully completed the project in one long day. In addition to the $378.00 they generated for their club they gained valuable experience pertaining to tree planting and tree seedling care.
